Bristol No Borders: Solidarity Statement to Greek Hunger Strikers

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on Wednesday, 2 February, 2011 by bristolnoborders

On January 25, 300 migrant workers went on hunger strike in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Their main demand is to be legalized. As of 2nd Feburary their struggle continues.

Messages have come from all around the World. We wish to add ours.

The Border between Greece and the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most heavily militarized in the World with the EU’s unaccountable and armed paramilitary security force – FRONTEX – patrolling, now not only the seas, but more recently. the border between Turkey and Greece..

Hundreds have perished in the seas, some having their boats deliberately capsized by FRONTEX patrols..

Those who make it (and those who don’t) are actively challenging the rationale of the securitization of our borders and the social and economic inequalities that they protect.

We send our message of thanks to the hunger strikers for standing up to the brutality of the border regime(s) that will sooner or later effect us all.

Culture of Disbelief and Denial

Lawyers are due to launch a legal challenge today on behalf of four women held at Yarl’s Wood detention centre, claiming their incarceration amounts to “cruel, inhumane and degrading” treatment that breaches their Both Serco (who runs Yarl’s Wood) and The Home Office have issued statements denying that a) any mistreatment took place and b) denying that the women were/ still are on hunger strike.

Meanwhile, The Former Case Officer The UKBA Cardiff Office (The regional Headquarters which includes Bristol) spoke at the Malcolm X centre on Bristol on Tuesday to an audience of over 200 people. Her revelations (if you’ve missed can be read in here Guardian article here but they told us what we already knew or guessed: That most people judging whether people should be granted asylum are Daily Mail reading racists who would “Like to take them (Asylum Seekers) out the back and shoot them”.

Off the back of the revelations, Refugee Voice called for a demo outside the offices in Cardiff. The photo below shows that it was well attended. The only question is whether Lou Perrit was the first person to bring maltreatment by UKBA, or was she just the first (white) person that anyone believed ? Anyway, our comrades from South Wales No Borders, are no doubt pleased that people have finally caught on to why they have picketed the office for several years.

Yarl’s Wood Hunger Strike Continues – Interview with Striker

Yesterday Meg Hiller from the Home office wrote a letter to all MP’s:

“The current misreporting, based on inaccurate and fabricated statements
by those who campaign against our policy, is irresponsible as it causes
unnecessary distress to the women at Yarl’s Wood, their family and friends
and those who work at the Centre to ensure the detainees are treated with
respect.”

So stop it, you are embarrassing the government!

Calais – Kronstadt Hanger Eviction

Arrested for helping migrants

Brighton No Borders Writes: Since the news of the impending opening of the Kronstadt Hanger, a self-organised resource centre for activists and migrants alike, the police had closely monitored the building and effective mounted a blockade of it since last Friday. On Saturday, people managed to circumvent the 3 police lines blocking access to the front door (they did not force their way in as Besson has claimed). Their numbers were swollen with migrants who were once again shelter-less following the closure after 2 days of the cold weather shelter at the BCMO…full report here A number of Bristol No Borders activists were present.

A statement from Sos Sans Papier can also be found (in french only)here: here.

Bristol Immigration Raid:

The UK Border Agency raided the Glassboat in Welsh Back during a lunch service and closed it off as officers arrested a Jamaican kitchen porter and Peruvian sous chef. Mr Lee, the owner said the Jamaican woman had been working at Glassboat since 2003 and that in 2008 the restaurant wrote to the Home Office to support an application to extend her visa.

He added: “The way they operated was a little shocking and heavy- handed. They didn’t ask to see the documents we had – and the office where I have copies of their documents is 100 yards away. They weren’t interested at all. They were like Stormtroopers as they made their way into the restaurant at the beginning of service at a time we had customers waiting to be seated. The “full” story and the normal racist comments can be found on the This is Bristol website: here

Meanwhile, Alberto Durango, persecuted by his employers and UKBA for his union activism has been sacked (again) by the Lancaster Cleaning Company in London. Background can be found here

Dale Farm Travellers

Hanningfield - Wanker

On a lighter Note, Traveller-hating posh-knob-scum-bag Lord Hanningfield is one of four politicians who face prosecution for the parlimenatry expenses scandal. Hanningfield is presently charged with making thousands of pounds worth of false claims for overnight accommodation while allegedly being chauffer-driven home from parliament.

It was he who wanted to tear down Dale Farms’s community centre and Chapel and had been the Queen’s Deputy Lieutenant of the county when in 2004 bailiffs and riot police stormed the Meadowlands caravan park, burning homes and evicting Travellers onto the road in freezing winter weather.

A interesting ariticle by Gratton Puxton about Dale Farm and “Irish” Travellers can be found here. An impending eviction attempt still looms for Dale Farms residents.
